previous night. They were given food and then, surprisingly, left alone. But the night was still fresh in Fai’s mind. He had no idea what time it was when the guards first started appearing, but he knew the visits onlystopped short ofdawn.

They would come, one by one, circling the bedding and the slaves on them like hungry sharks, and once someone caught their attention, that person would be led away. Even with his inexperience, Fai understood that this was no auction. Theywere takingtheir pleasure frommales who had no means of fighting back or even protesting.

Alot ofthemjust went quietly, and ifnot for the cries of terror, you never would have known who among the males was new. They were always returned eventually, some with tears streaking down their faces and some withvacant stares that chilled Faito the bone.

It only took a few such visits for the prayers to start. Different devotions that, even if understandable, meant nothing to Fai. Still, he knew the sound ofa prayer, and praytheydid.

He wasn’t sure if he was to thank his lucky stars come morning or remember the old Faiths his parents sometimes mentioned, because with the first traces of light, his fear dropped a notch. He was still in the same place he had been when he first got there, and most importantly, he was unused.

No one touched his new redheaded friend either, but that one easily slept through the night as if nothing in the universe could touchhim, and Faiadmired that courage.

Then as morning was gone and hunger insistently stirred in Fai’s belly, the man he feared came walking into the room. Fai wanted to disappear, his first instinct forcing him to huddle behind his friend even as he peeked over his shoulder. Somehow he knew the man had come looking for him, and the last thing he wanted was to be near him again. Without much thought, he realized that he would have preferred a visit fromone of the guards the night before to the simple presence ofthe man who, for him, was the very epitome of fearsomeness.

But the luck he had been thankful for earlier turned its back on him, and the man’s eyes zeroed in on Fai. The wicked look the man directed his way was enough to send a bolt ofterror throughFai’s heart.

The wandering stride turned purposeful, and in toofew heartbeats, the man stood above Fai. “Well, little cat, we meet again. And wonder of all wonders, you are special.”

Faiwould have taken it as a compliment ifnot for the nasty, calculating grin the man hid behind his words. Instead, he tried so desperately to disappear fromsight, but there was no place to go.

“Come.” He was grabbed almost painfully and dragged away, his last look one ofpainand inexplicable sorrow directed at his redheaded friend.
